North Holland is known as one of the leading provinces in the field of hospitality in the Netherlands. Important cities in North Holland

The largest and most famous city in North Holland is Amsterdam, also the capital of the Netherlands. Alkmaar is not only in North Holland, but world famous for its traditional cheese market, where cheese has been traded since the 14th century. Hoorn and Enkhuizen played an important role in the history of the VOC (Dutch East India Company) and have beautiful historic harbours. The Zaanse Schans is a popular tourist destination in North Holland where you can see traditional Dutch windmills, clog makers and cheese makers. 

Seaside resorts such as Zandvoort and Egmond aan Zee are popular with tourists and day trippers.

In the north of North Holland lies the island of Texel, part of the Wadden Islands, which is known for its nature, beaches and sheep farms.

North Holland is famous for its polders, reclaimed areas of land that used to be under water. One of the most famous polders is the Beemsterpolder, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. North Holland also has the largest lake in the Netherlands, the IJsselmeer, which used to be the Zuiderzee.
